2014 QB's...Who's It Going to Be?

One of the hottest topics on the Michigan recruiting trail right now is which 2014 quarterback will receive an offer and eventually commit?  Right now the Wolverines appear to have narrowed their wishlist down to four signal-callers.  David Cornwell (North High School - Norman, OK), Michael O'Connor (IMG Academy - Bradenton, FL), Wilton Speight (The Collegiate School - Richmond, VA), Travis Smith (Ithaca High School - Ithaca, MI) round out the top group.  I believe Caleb Henderson (Lake Braddock High School - Burke, VA) is still somewhat in the mix, but he is a distant #5.  I had a chance to get in touch with each young man and just get a quick feel for where they stand right now, knowing offers might be coming soon.

David Cornwell - Cornwell very bluntly told me he would NOT commit on the spot if offered.  He says there are still just too many variables as he is in regular contact with Alabama, has UCLA, Arkansas, Stanford, and LSU really high on his list, and possesses offers from Indiana, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Washington State.  Earlier today he said " I'm going to get on the phone with Coach Hoke Wednesday (signing day) and then with Coach Borges.  More than likely they will offer me."  I asked him if we should be on commit watch and he said, "No more info, that's all I'm saying."  I'm sure this kid is being hounded constantly so I can't say I blame him for taking a silent stance. Stay tuned.

Michael O'Connor - O'Connor was a little less serious with his comment saying, "You never know :P" when I asked him if he'd commit on the spot.  He did admit he would "really think about it, that's for sure."  He has been very "political" with his answers to me saying he has really learned how much of a business this whole recruiting process is.

Wilton Speight - My most recent contact has been with Speight, as recently as about 10 minutes ago.  He tweeted, "Hittin the sheets. Big morning ahead of me. #goblue" around 10:30 pm as he prepares to throw for the Michigan coaches Friday morning.  I texted him to wish him good luck and he responded with, "GO BLUE! I know I won't get the offer tomorrow and apparently Cornwell is going to get it, but I know I'd love to be running the two-minute offense in the Big House someday.  I can only hope and have faith!"  Speight will contact me immediately following his workout in the morning.

Travis Smith - Small town phenom Travis Smith doesn't appear to be everyone's favorite target, but the kid loves Michigan and is probably the best athlete out of the group.  He is smaller and doesn't have the arm strength of the rest but he wins games and would probably be the best bet to commit on the spot if offered.  He expects to hear back from Coach Borges after the staff returns from the road.  Travis said he really hopes he gets a big phone call from the coaches saying, "Michigan is the team I've always wanted to play for growing up. I always pictured myself in the maize and blue. It would be hard not to commit right away."  If something doesn't pan out with the others, Smith is probably a lock if offered.

Caleb Henderson - The coaches don't appear to be pursuing Henderson as aggressively as the other four QB's but he is still interested and definitely capable.  I asked him if an instant-commit was a possibility and he said, "Michigan is an amazing school but before that happens I would like to go back up to campus and watch a practice to see how they're coached.  I wouldn't want to get offered if I wasn't there in person.  If I'm their guy I would want them to tell me so I could go up and visit again."  He followed that by saying he loves Michigan and they would be his leader if they decided to offer.  If Michigan likes Henderson, he will like them back.

  1. I'm assuming we are just taking one qb in this class? Some good qbs in this group.

  2. I wish we would offer all four at once and take 2

  3. Cromwell makes no sense. On one hand he is begging for a offer and on the other hand he says there are to many variables to commit on the spot. I can't blame a kid for waiting to take more visits just to make sure that's where he wants to go. But what I don't get is how you call the coaches at leased twice a week to see when your getting offered and then say I am not sure that's where I want to go. If offered I would bet he would commit on the spot.

    1. Maybe it's part of a bigger game plan for him. He knows Michigan is targeting him. Maybe he thinks an offer from UoM would get other schools he's more interested in to take a better look at him and offer him as well.

  4. I read on Twitter that Speight threw well today. Could he be offered today? And will he commit? I hope yes. If UM could wrap up there 2014 QB now that would really help in recruiting WR. I would still like for UM to take two QBs in this class. Smith would be a nice addition. Just saying.

    1. Jer I COMPETELY agree with Smith being a nice addition. The staff could mantain contact and then offer him in December or Jan of next year and he would probably still jump on board. I personally like Cornwell as the top option and then Travis Smith late. Smith's versatility is intriguing as a bigger, more athletic version of Dileo.

  5. Coach, what's the likelihood that the Denzel Ward situation will do anything with UM's chances with O'Connor now that they are teammates?

  7. If we can get 2 of them with the 2nd being Smith that would be awesome. I am all about letting small school kids having a shot at the school of their dreams. That being said, I would hate for him to be out only 2014 QB. I want someone like Cornwell who will battle with Morris from day 1 to be Gardner's replacement. If Smith jumps in on that battle and loses, he can move into the slot. Lord knows we need receivers.

  9. could you make a argument for Cornwell or O'Connor?

  10. 1-4 Cornwell O'Connor Speight Henderson
    5 Smith
You can make an argument for any of the 4 being the best. My personal preference would be O'Connor or Cornwell

  11. Yeah AC that is exactly what my top 4 look like. I would be happy to get and of the guys, but Cornwell and O'Connor are at the top of my list.

  13. I would like to pick up smith and one of the other 3 qbs. I do feel like it would be in good interest to offer all 4 at the same time to avoid negative feelings, especially if there first choice doesn't pick Michigan. what do you guys think?

  14. Since it seems like someone is going to get offered on Wednesday I would like to see the coaches offer their top 3 according to Speight/CB3 of Cornwell, O'Connor and Speight. The only problem I can see is that the coaches seem to have Cornwell as the #1 Guy but it seems like O'Connor or Speight may commit on the spot so who does Hoke call first?

    1. If they do give out offers on Wednesday they may give them out a couple hours apart just to give them time to commit before they give out the next one. If Cornwell is offered first I believe he commits. If not Speight will. Has any of these guys visit UM yet? I can't remember if they have.

Getting a QB this early will really help in recruiting but it does scare me that they may think they committed to early and pull a Conley.
