Michigan kicked off spring practice today and in this 4:41 video clip a few things stand out. First you have got to love the head man getting in the mix teaching technique to his team. Seeing Greg Mattison working in a small group setting with the defensive line is a one-of-a-kind type of learning experience for young players. It was also good to see Chris Wormley going through some of those technique drills after a torn ACL last year. Newly hired linebackers coach Roy Manning is shown running with the defensive players during a pursuit drill bringing a youthful exuberance to the practice field. Blake Countess makes an appearance as well running through coverage drills and looking pretty smooth in the absence of a knee brace. Jehu Chesson is shown making a nice catch and sprinting down the sideline during 7-on-7 passing drills, while Devin Funchess goes up high to make a beautiful catch and run to the endzone. Just one spring practice in the books, but this makes me happy.
One thing I noticed was the size of the dline compared to years past. Everyone looks ready to take the pounding this year. I won't read too much into the running game this spring because I don't think anyone playing this spring will see any/much time come fall.
